How to Review and Restore WordPress Revisions Print

Revisions let you inspect earlier saved versions of a page or post. Availability depends on the site's revision settings and saved history.

Steps

  1. Open the entry and its Page or Post settings, then select the revisions control when available.
  2. Move through the saved revisions and compare the text changes. The comparison screen varies by WordPress version.
  3. Identify the version that contains the desired content and preserve any newer text you still need.
  4. Use the restore control for that revision, then review the editor's resulting content and publication state.
  5. Preview the result and save or update if the interface requires it.

Check the result

Confirm the intended content appears on the public page when published, including links and media references.

Before you continue

A content revision is not a full website backup. It does not recover deleted media files, plugin code, or every external setting. Restoring an earlier version can remove later editorial work, so coordinate with anyone editing the same entry.

Match the revisions interface

WordPress 7.0 introduces a new revisions screen with change markers and a Restore action; the classic comparison remains available. Earlier versions use the classic screen. Select the intended saved version and compare the actual content before restoring.

If the revision or media is missing

If no suitable revision exists, check retained drafts and the site’s actual recovery copies rather than assuming WordPress keeps unlimited history. If restored text references a missing image, identify and recover that attachment separately or replace the reference with the intended current file. Check the public page after any related media recovery.
