How to Tell Whether to Edit a WordPress Page or Its Template Print

Page content belongs to an individual page, while a template defines a reusable layout. Editing the wrong layer can change several pages at once.

Steps

  1. For a page’s main text and images, open Pages, find that page, and edit its content.
  2. Check the assigned template in the page settings when the surrounding layout is the problem.
  3. On a site that supports template editing, open the relevant template through the editor controls or Appearance’s Site Editor. Confirm which pages use it.
  4. Keep the Post Content block when the template should display each page’s own body. Review shared headers, footers, and other template parts before editing them.
  5. Inspect the save confirmation so you know which content, template, or template-part changes will be saved.

Check the result

Check the target page and at least one other page using the same template. Both should retain their own content and intended layout.

Before you continue

Template editing is theme-dependent and may be unavailable. A shared template change is not limited to the page from which you opened it.
